Asian Behavioral Health Network (ABHN)
Lauren Thompson, LMSW
Primary Office Location: Austin, TX

States Served: Texas
I believe in creating authentic connections with clients and have a passion for working with people who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, and/or those who have experienced struggles related to cultural identity, queer identity, family of origin, life transitions, trauma, multiculturalism, interpersonal challenges, pregnancy/prenatal/postpartum, micro-aggressions, generational trauma, and grief. I work to decolonize systems of practice and center the client’s unique and collective experience. Clients would describe me as authentic, curious, outgoing yet calming, non-judgmental, funny, honest, and respectful of identities and values.

Mental health stigma in our Asian/South Asian community can create an isolating, shaming, and defeating environment for anyone who is already battling mental, emotional, relational, or spiritual struggles. As a child of Indian immigrants growing up in American culture, I too have faced the exhaustion of trying hard to be okay on the outside when I wasn’t okay on the inside. The truth is, we’re all struggling – and we don’t have to struggle alone.
I believe in a holistic approach to understanding each of my counseling clients, which I define in two ways: (1) You are composed of body, mind, and soul; and (2) You are one part of a larger, relational, family, and cultural system. This means we will enter into our work in a way that addresses, integrates, and supports all facets of who you are so you can successfully work towards your goals for therapy. While you and I may both identify as South Asian children of immigrants, I recognize that my South Indian American and Orthodox Christian background may differ from yours — I warmly welcome your unique background with respect, equality, and curiosity.
When working with me in therapy, you can expect compassion, acceptance, collaboration, and humor as we journey side-by-side through the discomfort and complexities of human life. Life can be challenging—and asking for help often feels twice as challenging. I aim to help make your therapeutic experience a lot less shameful and a lot more hopeful.

My name is Celestie Nguyen (she/her), and I am a queer, first-generation woman of colour with my heart in my hands and a love for buying new books before I can finish my current ones. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), and earned my MSW from Columbia University’s School of Social Work. I am deeply committed to practicing from an anti-capitalist and anti-oppressive lens, and supporting clients onwards in their expansive journey of mental health.
My work is rooted in social justice practices, and is heavily informed by my belief that healing and growth comes from truly seeing ourselves and embracing the parts within that we may turn away from. I view therapy as a collaborative process, which makes you my ever-knowing teammate! I value curiosity, compassion, and safety in our space together, and will actively work to decolonize mental health in all aspects of our work.
No matter what you are going through or where you’ve been, you deserve to be here. Allowing yourself to embrace your flaws will allow you to see the imperfection in our communities, and the humanity that is so deeply rooted within yourself. There are no bad parts of you. The abundance of who you are and what surrounds you is worth loving. You are magic and messy and beautiful, and together, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!

I earned my Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan 1995. I started my career working with survivors of partner/family violence and then worked in community mental health and psychiatry. After a decade of working, I transitioned away from social work to pursue additional education and other interests. In 2016 I immersed myself in local and national public school advocacy for several years before returning to clinical work and private practice.
I work with people from all cultures and I have a particular interest in working with folks who live at the intersection of multiple racial and cultural identities. I believe our internal world connects deeply to our culture and society and our wellness is intertwined with systems, small and large.

Hello everyone! I’m Ted Thao, a second-generation Asian American therapist. I foster authenticity and well-being in our sessions. I believe that people can experience two opposing emotions and those emotions can hold value and truth. It’s honoring, understanding, and accepting these emotions and how they can benefit our lives or even cause us to live in constant misery.
Born and raised in the Hmong culture, I understand the power of diverse stories and the varied experiences that shape our lives. As a therapist, I create a safe and inclusive space for everyone by weaving our connections together regardless of our background, to embark on a transformative journey towards embracing our authentic selves.
I have experience working with 1st & 2nd immigrants/refugees, veterans, first responders, individuals who abuse substances, perfectionism, and ADHD. Through these communities, I have experienced treating but not limited to; self-esteem, anxiety, depression, identity, PTSD, complex trauma, substance abuse, & grief.
